The Vietnam-Netherlands Masters in Development Economics (MDE) is a two years regular degree taught at the National Economics University (NEU), Hanoi. Graduates receive a degree signed by the Rectors of both the NEU and the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), The Hague, The Netherlands. The MDE curriculum focuses on applying economic theory to the policy challenges facing Vietnam. The degree, taught in English, includes both coursework and thesis components, and is Vietnam's leading economics degree. The MDE Program has achieved international standards in the teaching of economics.
To ensure the quality, reputation and accreditation of the MA programmes, the ISS has a system of External Assessors, who judge the quality and level of the master degree programmes and of markings standards. Since 2008, the ISS Board has decided that the MDE programme in Vietnam would be subject to external assessment as any other ISS programme. The assessment was conducted in late 2008 on various aspects of the programme. The assessment result indicates that the MDE programme “meets the quality benchmark that is applied to ISS postgraduate programmes”. It is expected that the MDE programme will be regularly assessed as other programmes of ISS.
