Tuesday, November 04, 2008 Time: 6.00-7.30pm, "Social purposes businesses for community development in Ontario, Canada - The first survey of the population " Place: The Conference Room, National Economics University 2nd floor, Building 10, 207 Giai Phong road, Hanoi
Abstract Community development, particularly for economically and socially marginal sub-populations in Canada, has historically been delivered through nonprofit and nongovernmental organisations. Recently, however increased discussion and experimentation has looked to more market-based approaches to community development. One is these is the establishment of 'social purpose businesses' which are designed to be both economically successful and also to employ and train some group of disadvantaged people. This presentation will profile the FIRST survey of social purpose businesses ever undertaken to establish the broad characteristics of the population. The findings are quite a strong contrast to the manner in which social purpose businesses are portrayed in popular community development and international development contexts.
